BOSTON – In Massachusetts, mehr als 40 Prozent der Flüchtlinge und Einwanderer erhalten keine staatlichen Sozialleistungen und sind daher auf private Spenden und Sponsorship angewiesen.
Of the 3,000 refugees who arrived in the state in 2022, only 1,100 received state assistance. This leaves a significant number of refugees and immigrants relying on private sponsorships for housing, employment, and other basic needs.
The sponsorship program is run by a coalition of non-profit organizations such as the International Institute of New England and the Jewish Family Services of Western Massachusetts. These organizations help match sponsors with individuals or families in need of support.
Many sponsors provide housing, help in finding a job, transportation, and language assistance. These efforts are crucial in helping refugees and immigrants integrate into their new communities and become self-sufficient.
However, the demand for sponsors continues to grow as more refugees and immigrants arrive in Massachusetts seeking a better life. This has put a strain on the resources of the non-profit organizations running the sponsorship program.
Despite the challenges, many sponsors find the experience rewarding and fulfilling. They see firsthand the positive impact their support has on the lives of those in need.
As the number of refugees and immigrants in Massachusetts continues to increase, the need for sponsorship and support from the community will remain crucial in helping these individuals rebuild their lives and contribute to society.
